You are invited to join for the pre-Gather at the River events starting Thursday morning. Throughout the day, a number of groups will meet for organizing, re-connecting, and building face-to-face relationships—utilizing the freedom of having extended hours together. Please watch here for more information on the full list of participating groups and extension ministries that will meet during this time. Plan to join in this opportunity to get connected before Gather at the River officially begins.

Gather at the River embarks on Thursday evening with spirited worship led by Dr. Marcia McFee and Mark Miller. Following worship will be a time of welcome and greeting to introduce participants to the wonders that will unfold this momentous weekend. Rev. Grace Imathiu will provide a glimpse of the Bible studies coming up.

Friday, August 7, 2015

Worship with Dr. Marcia McFee and Mark Miller opens and sets the tone for the first full day of Gather at the River. RMN Executive Director Matt Berryman will then moderate a time of reflection on “Biblical Obedience: What Is It? Why Does it Matter?” Rev. Grace Imathiu’s Bible study will bring global perspectives to our spiritual development leading into discussions in small groups or “reflecting pools.” One-half of the participants will meet in facilitated discussion groups while the other half eats lunch. A second lunch session will allow the first half to eat lunch while the previous lunch group meets in “reflecting pools” groups.

During the afternoon participants can choose among a multitude of learning opportunities in two sessions of workshops delving into a diversity of issues and concerns facing progressive United Methodists and looking forward to the General Conference 2016. An extended dinner break will allow participants to stroll San Antonio’s River Walk and eat in a restaurant or café.

Friday evening will bring a flavor of San Antonio culture with performances byCampanas de América, a renowned local mariachi band, and IlluMen, an outstanding male chorale. Between these performances Gather at the River participants will be challenged and stimulated by an address from Bishop Minerva Carcaño.

Saturday, August 8, 2015

Lively worship with Mark Miller and Dr. Marcia McFee launches the next day of Gather at the River.

Following worship, MFSA Executive Director Chett Pritchett will moderate an inquiry into “United Methodists and the Intersections of Justice.” Rev. Grace Imathiu will once again present an illuminating Bible study leading into a repeat of Friday’s “reflecting pools,” small-group discussions to help participants extend and deepen relationships and connections with other colleagues on the journey. The same “reflecting pool” groups will alternate with the lunch service as on Friday.

The afternoon will engage the broadly-based Love Your Neighbor Coalition in presenting the preparations and enlisting support for a powerful justice witness at the 2016 General Conference. This assembly time will also include presentation of special awards by RMN and MFSA.

Saturday evening will bring a gala celebration banquet at the Sheraton Gunter Hotel lifting up voices and stories that propel our movement for God’s justice towards General Conference 2016. Singer and song writer Jennifer Knapp will share some of her story and music. The Rev. Frank Schaefer will witness about his journey of radical Biblical Obedience.

Sunday, August 9, 2015

The last morning will provide an opportunity to take next steps in preparation for the General Conference witness. Then Rev. Grace Imathiu will challenge participants with the biblical call that leads us forward. Gather at the River participants will join the Travis Park UMC congregation in a closing sacramental celebration of prayer and praise to send us on our journey home.
