AWE now stands for “Affirming and Welcoming Everybody!” A group of Reconcilers at Christ United Methodist Church in Lincoln, Nebraska have committed themselves to welcome and to work toward the day when the whole Church is Reconciling. This does mean both the local Christ UMC congregation and the whole United Methodist Church. The group includes a variety of folks including families with young children who can see a better vision for our Church.

A portion of their statement says, “We pledge ourselves to work to create an atmosphere in our church so that all God’s children feel safe, welcomed, and affirmed, regardless of age, race, ethnicity, culture, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, family status, political beliefs, religion, economic condition, physical ability, or mental ability. We will not use scripture in a way that does spiritual violence to any group of persons. We will encourage and initiate dialogues on issues of inclusiveness through a variety of channels, including meetings and book studies. We hope to be a strong voice to encourage others to claim their voices.”
