Why Should I Tell My Story?

We tell stories because they engage our whole selves – feelings, thoughts, hopes, cares, and values. Stories give us the vocabulary to express faith and values through lived experience rather than abstract debate and because stories engage our emotions, they inspire commitment and action. When we tell stories together, we find renewed energy from re-discovering our own deeply held commitments and ignite the passion of others. By framing our commitment to full inclusion in story, we build relationships based in our diverse experiences and common values. Each perspective is valued; no story gets the last word.

Your reconciling story will be unique and will touch lives as none other can.

How to prepare and share your story:

If you have been trained in the Called To Witness Campaigns: All Mans All, or Believe Out Loud, you probably already know how to tell your story! Please consider taking a few minutes to prepare your story remembering what you learned. For a refresher, see the How To Prepare Your Story handout.

Tips For Story Telling:

• Be 2-5 minutes: Good stories are focused and well-organized. Remember you are telling the story of one moment in time. Focus on one challenge, one choice and one outcome.
• Be specific—use details: Take the listener to the moment you are describing. What are the sights, sounds, smells, and emotions of that moment. How did it look?
• Describe people, actions and events rather than explaining them.
• Tap into emotion: Stories should pull at the heartstrings of the listener. Help the listener understand the values you are describing through the language of emotion.
• Communicate values: Stories have a point and that point is a value that you want to inspire and cultivate in the listener.
• Offer hope: Stories should be inspirational. End on a positive note. Offer the good news through your story.
• Relax. Stories are not performances – just speak from your heart.
