More than a thousand United Methodist clergy across the United States have signed statements committing themselves to fulfill their vow to ministry by marrying or blessing couples regardless of their gender. More than a third of the population of the United States lives where marriage or civil unions for gay and lesbian couples are legal. When parishioners come to their pastors to request that they officiate at their weddings, ministers face a conflict between their vow to minister to their whole congregation and their vow to uphold the Book of Discipline which asks them to deny ministry to some of their members.

We, United Methodists, lay and clergy, in accordance with our membership vows to “resist evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves,” commit to supporting these prophetic clergy in faithfully ministering to all, including through any consequences of their living fully into that duty.
Love Your NeighborUnited Methodists from across our connexion will engage in Holy Conferencing with General Conference delegates. We seek to obey Jesus’ command to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31) by telling our stories and building relationships with United Methodists from every walk of life and theological position. Through our statement “For the Love of God and Neighbor” we proclaim to the church that we humbly accept God’s gift of our own diverse humanity.
Join your voice with retired bishops and other faithful United Methodists in support of removing anti-gay discrimination in our ordination policies!
When the full Bishop’s Council cannot clearly name the concern in its response to these retired bishops, we must take action to help them believe out loud. Unclear silence cannot be the voice of our spiritual leaders.
